The Cher & around
Canoeing in the morning, the river barge in the afternoon, the château on foot and the woods just behind.
The house is at Chenonceaux, on the river Cher, a few hundred metres from the château. We do not hire out boats and we organise no outings, but everything is a few minutes away, on foot or by bicycle.
On the water
The canoes come down the Cher early in the morning, before the wind gets up. The gabare goes back up against the current in the afternoon: first you hear its engine, then the voices of the passengers sitting under the awning. There is a hire base a little further along the bank, a few minutes’ walk away.
The château
The château of Chenonceau is ten minutes away on foot, along the towpath that follows the Cher. We are only its neighbours, but we like going there at the end of the day: there are fewer people, and the light comes down gently on the water.
The woods
Several paths leave the towpath for the woods, in the shade of the oaks. You meet cyclists there, people walking their dogs, sometimes a roe deer early in the morning. An old stone monument, mossy and half worn away, is nearly always come upon by chance.
The vineyards
The vineyards begin just past the last houses, on both sides of the village. You walk alongside them on the way to the station, or cycle through them towards Amboise. There is nothing in particular to visit: just rows of vines as far as you can see, and the silence of the plateau above the valley.
