Five rooms, five sizes, five different views. Each one is named after a boat or a river trade.
La Gabare

The largest of the five, with two windows facing the garden. Behind the lime trees, you can see the water. The glazed cabinet was here before us; we kept it and filled it with blankets. The floorboards creak in front of the left-hand window. Early in the morning, the lapping of paddles comes before the canoes themselves.

Le Halage

Up in the roof, with a dormer window and a ceiling that slopes on one side. The bed is wrought iron, under a patchwork quilt found at a car-boot sale. An earthenware basin and jug sit on the window ledge, for the look of it rather than for use. It is a good room in summer, cooler than the ones below.

La Toue

Facing the fields rather than the river. A large casement window, with its original catches, opens onto the hedge and then the fields. No view of the water from this room, but another kind of quiet — more wind in the leaves than lapping water. The morning light here is clean and direct.

The back wall was left as bare, rough stone. We put a large patterned panel behind the bed, with a wall light on either side for reading. It is the darkest room by day and the warmest in the evening — the stones hold the heat, and in winter the radiator is barely enough.

La Cale

The smallest of the five, fully panelled in dark wood. A plain pendant lamp above the bedside table, a stone alcove left bare in one corner. People sleep well here — the wood soaks up the sound of footsteps on the stairs. The window looks onto the courtyard, not the garden.

In every room
A private shower room in all five bedrooms, most with a walk-in shower; la Toue has a bath. Towels provided, Wi-Fi throughout the house. No air conditioning — the thick walls are enough in summer. No television either, unless you ask for one.
